Since its founding, Hephaestus has been dedicated in generating groundbreaking knowledge, fostering innovation, and applying these advancements to benefit society. Its reputation as a center of excellence extends beyond Greece, strengthened by international partnerships with top universities and research institutions. These collaborations have established Hephaestus as a key contributor in the region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, significantly impacting fields such as environmental, energy, nanotechnology and materials science, informatics and big data management.

Hephaestus Laboratory operates with a public and private funding, enabling it to pursue ambitious projects that impact both local and national levels. A standout example of its private partnerships is the Fellowship Program funded by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, through which Hephaestus received approximately €1 million. This program specifically aims to combat brain drain by offering talented researchers opportunities to work on pioneering projects within Greece, helping to retain intellectual talent in the country.

The lab is directed by a Board of Directors consisting of faculty members who are also research leaders, each contributing their expertise to the lab’s diverse areas of focus. Under their leadership, Hephaestus is dedicated to creating research-driven ecosystems that enhance social welfare not only in the region but across the country, with a strong focus on engagement with the European Union.
